About the Blog:
“Discovering
Literature” is an edublog which is being launched by the Department of English,
Uttarakhand Open University, Haldwani. Through this blog the Department aims at
reaching out to its students, especially the ones residing in the remote corners
of the State, by taking literature to their doorstops and thereby encouraging
them to explore the rich world of literature for themselves. The blog also
gives us an opportunity to establish a relationship with our students as it
enables us to share literary ideas that interest and excite us. “Discovering
literature” is also a great platform for all those aspiring writers who wish to
break out of their shells and open out to a wider audience. We envision our
blog to be a forum where literary ideas and discussions will be exchanged and
disseminated freely, a kind of literary community which will help in fostering
a literary spirit among the readers. So welcome to this exciting world and keep
blogging!
About the Department:
The
Department of English and Foreign Languages is one of the seven departments of
the School of Humanities. The Department currently offers BA and MA Programmes
in English and will soon be launching certificate courses in Chinese, Japanese
and Spanish languages as well. The total number of students enrolled in the BA
and MA Programmes is ______ & ____ respectively.
We
at Uttarakhand Open University are committed to providing quality education to
all who have the determination to pursue education but do not have enough time
and resources to pursue mainstream education. The Department is working
relentlessly to uphold the University’s mission of reach out to the unreached.
The
Department offers courses both in English Language and English Literature at
the Undergraduate level. At the Post Graduate level, besides
British literature, we have introduced American literature, Indian and Modern
Literary theory and Criticism, and most importantly, with a view to familiarize
students with the great Indian tradition, we have introduced a course in Indian
Writing in English and in Translation as well.
Besides
providing quality study material to our students, the Department also organizes
counselling sessions and workshops for students from time to time. Keeping pace
with the fast changing world, Uttarakhand Open University is incorporating
technology to enhance teaching and we are constantly working in this direction.
We are in the process of recording our audio-visual lectures and making them
available to our students. The University also has access to the educational satellite
EDUSAT and soon we will start telecasting lectures to our students as well.
To conclude, the overall mission of the
Department is to inculcate reading habits in the students so they can truly
appreciate literature and use it in realizing the significance of Life. This
blog is a small step in that direction.
